Ambarella Hybrid Camera Platform Incorporates Aptina Ten Mega-Pixel Sensor For High Resolution Photos and Video
Santa Clara, California

Ambarella, Inc., the leader in low-power, high- definition video compression and image processing semiconductors, has incorporated the 10 Mega-pixel (MP) sensor from Aptina Imaging, a global provider of CMOS imaging solutions, into its newly announced A5 hybrid camera platform.

The Ambarella A5, announced earlier this week, combines a high-performance image pipeline with an H.264 compression engine. The Aptina 10 MP sensor is a CMOS device capable of acquiring as many as 2 million pixels at a sustained input rate of 60 frames per second (fps).  By integrating the Aptina 10 MP sensor into the Ambarella platform, photographers and videographers can purchase a hybrid camera that fits into a shirt pocket yet still shoots high-quality digital still images and full high-definition video separately or in combination.

Aptina’s rapidly advancing CMOS technology enables high-performance cameras as seen in the MT9J001 10MP image sensor. The sensor incorporates a unique 1.67-micron pixel format and the HiSPi™ serial data interface to achieve full HD (1080p60) video performance, beyond the capabilities of CCD technology.

In utilizing the Aptina part as the sensor input component to the Ambarella platform, the companies addressed the challenge of delivering high-quality pictures captured in low light conditions. High sensitivity and advanced motion compensated temporal filtering are combined to allow sharp, noise-free video and still images even in a low light environment. A high-speed serial interface co-developed by Ambarella and Aptina (HiSPi™) enables high frame rate data transfer between the semiconductor chips.

“Working with Aptina to enable compact high-definition hybrid cameras changes the way consumers can capture, share and store memories,” stated Dr. Didier LeGall, executive vice-president of Ambarella. “Both Ambarella and Aptina have proven records of developing cost-effective and cutting-edge technology that enables highly unique and desirable consumer products.”

“The 10MP MT9J001 image sensor’s unique HiSPi interface and high speed frame rate are an excellent match with Ambarella’s new high-performance A5 hybrid camera platform,” noted Sandor Barna, vice-president and general manager for camera sensors at Aptina. “The solution created by these combined technologies addresses the desire consumers have for capturing high-speed video without sacrificing the image quality of a conventional digital still camera.”
